About this design

This is a narrow design meant for a bookmark: three stems of lavender gathered into a bunch and tied with a dusty pink bow. Each flower spike is built from little whorls of buds in three blue-violets (333, 3746 and 340), with short gaps of green stem between the lower whorls, the way real lavender grows. The stems curve in from either side to meet at the bow and then run straight down together, which gives the bookmark a neat bottom edge.

How to work it

Work the three flower spikes first. They all follow the same repeat (a dark centre stitch flanked by mid and light violet), so after the first spike the other two go quickly. Stitch the diagonal stems next. They are single stitches touching corner to corner, so take care to bring the needle up in the right hole each time. The bow covers the point where the stems meet. Stitch it last, in 3731 with 3733 in the loops, and add the dark centre stem below.

Finishing ideas

At 17 × 41 stitches the design measures about 1.2 × 2.9 inches on 14-count. For a bookmark, stitch it on a pre-finished Aida band or on a strip of fabric about 2.5 × 7 inches, then back it with felt. On 11-count it becomes 1.5 × 3.7 inches, which leaves room to stitch a name or a date below the bow.
