About this design

The apple is Red with a White shine on the upper left and a little Cherry along the lower right to give it some roundness. A Brown stalk rises from the dip at the top, with a Green leaf to one side. It is a classic back-to-school make and a simple thank-you gift for a teacher, glued to a magnet or a card.

Bead counts: 94 Red, 48 Black, 5 Green, 5 Cherry, 3 Brown and 2 White, 157 beads in all. Buy a few spares of each colour, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

The pattern is 16 × 15, so it sits inside one large square pegboard; centre it so there is a margin all round. Place the stalk and leaf last; they sit above the outline and are easy to knock while you fill the red.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge. Let it cool, turn it over and press the back, then cool it flat under a heavy book. At about 8 × 7.5 cm it makes a fridge magnet or a teacher gift.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
