About this design

This cactus is the kind of plant that never needs watering. Its trunk and two arms are striped in vertical ribs: Kiwi Lime down the left edge for light, then alternating Green and Dark Green columns. The left arm rises higher than the right, so the plant does not look too stiff. A Cotton Candy flower with a single Lemon centre sits on top, and a little Brown soil shows either side of the trunk. The pot is Spice, with an Apricot rim and Rust shading down the right side and along the base.

Bead counts: 89 Black, 70 Green, 64 Dark Green, 64 Spice, 31 Kiwi Lime, 17 Rust, 15 Apricot, 10 Cotton Candy, 6 Brown and 1 Lemon.

Placing the beads

The design is 17 × 29, so start on the top row of a large square pegboard. The ribs are easiest if you place one colour at a time down each column. The black gap between each arm and the trunk is only one bead wide; count it carefully or the arms will merge into the trunk.

Ironing and finishing

The iron is an adult’s job. Cover with ironing paper and use medium heat. The flower is joined to the cactus by just a few beads, so make sure that area is fused well on both sides. Cool it under a book. At about 8.5 × 14.5 cm it makes a nice magnet for a desk or a plant-lover’s gift tag.

Colour plan

Perler 80-19018 Black does the most work, 24% of the 367 beads, followed by Perler 80-19080 Bright Green at 19%. Perler 80-19012 Brown (6) and Perler 80-15269 Lemon (1) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 26% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
