About this design

This cheerful portrait-format picture has three balloons at different heights and sizes, which makes them look like they are at different distances. The biggest, near the top, has bold stripes of DMC 321 Red and 726 Topaz Light. A small one on the left is 741 Tangerine Medium and 3810 Turquoise Dark, and a medium one on the right is 3607 Plum Light and 553 Violet. Each hangs a little 434 Brown Light basket. The sky fades from 3325 Baby Blue Light through 775 to 3753 near the bottom, with puffy Snow White clouds.

How to work it

The chart has 4,800 drills in 12 colours. The balloon stripes curve with the shape of the envelope, so place the outline of each stripe first and fill inwards.

Size and display

With 2.5 mm square drills the picture is 60 × 80 drills, about 15 × 20 cm. The tall format suits a child’s room or a narrow wall, and a white frame keeps it airy. The materials table lists every colour with a 10% allowance for drills that go astray.

Colour plan

DMC 3325 Baby Blue Light does the most work, 33% of the 4,800 drills, followed by DMC 775 Baby Blue Very Light at 21%. DMC 3371 Black Brown (4) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

4 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; place those drills one at a time. The busiest row changes colour 14 times.
