About this design
The rose head is a wide cup of DMC 3712 Salmon Medium, with swirls of 3328 Salmon Dark marking the folds of the petals and a 814 Garnet Dark outline that gives it definition. Two little sprigs of 989 Forest Green sit above the bloom, a 3346 Hunter Green stem drops straight down from a small calyx, and a single leaf in 3346 and 3345 grows out to the left. It is a classic romantic motif for cards, wedding gifts and Valentine’s Day.
How to work it
Outline the bloom in garnet first, then fill the salmon and add the darker swirls on top as single stitches. Stitch the stem from the calyx downwards and finish with the leaf. For a crisper look, backstitch around the leaf in 3345.
Finishing ideas
At 23 × 20 stitches the design is about 1.6 × 1.4 inches (4.2 × 3.6 cm) on 14-count Aida and 1.3 × 1.1 inches on 18-count. Frame it in a 4-inch hoop, add it to a wedding card, or stitch a row of three roses along a pillowcase edge.
Colour plan
DMC 3712 Salmon Medium does the most work, 47% of the 146 stitches, followed by DMC 814 Garnet Dark at 18%. DMC 3345 Hunter Green Dk (3) and DMC 987 Forest Green Dk (2) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 68% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
24 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 12 times.
