About this design
Blackwork is a traditional style of geometric embroidery in black thread. This band translates it into cross stitch: a diagonal lattice of DMC 310 Black lines crosses the fabric, short black spokes radiate from each crossing point, and small 321 Red diamonds sit in the spaces between. A solid black line frames the top and bottom. The pattern repeats every 12 stitches, so the band can be extended to any width.
How to work it
Stitch the diagonal lines first; they form the framework, and everything else hangs from them. Then add the spokes and finish with the red diamonds. Count carefully at each crossing point, because mistakes in a lattice are easy to see.
Finishing ideas
At 48 × 24 stitches the design is about 3.4 × 1.7 inches (8.7 × 4.4 cm) on 14-count Aida and 2.7 × 1.3 inches on 18-count. Use it as a border on a towel, a bookmark band or one row of a larger sampler.
Colour plan
DMC 310 Black does the most work, 81% of the 424 stitches, followed by DMC 321 Red at 19%. Every colour is used at least 80 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 63% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
228 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 31 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
