About this design
The Greek key, or meander, is one of the oldest border patterns there is, found on pottery, mosaics and architecture for well over two thousand years. Its single continuous line folding back on itself makes it ideal for counted work: every stitch sits on the grid with no part stitches. This version uses DMC 3750 Antique Blue Very Dark for the key and 3768 Gray Green Dark for the rules above and below, a quiet pairing that looks at home on linen or antique-white Aida.
How to stitch it
The key repeats every 8 stitches and the chart shows eight repeats plus a closing column. Begin with the full-width line that forms the top of the key, because the rest of each repeat hangs from it and it gives you a straight reference. Then work down through each spiral, completing one repeat before moving on; it is far easier to spot a miscount within a single spiral than across the whole band. The spirals have narrow single-stitch gaps that must stay open, so check every repeat against the chart before you start the next. Add the two grey-green rules last.
Using the band
On 14-count Aida the chart is about 4.6 inches long and 0.9 inches tall; on 28-count linen over two threads the size is the same. Repeat the 8-stitch unit as often as you like to edge a guest towel, a table runner or the bottom of a sampler, and finish with the closing column so both ends match. Each extra repeat adds about 0.6 inches on 14-count.
Colour plan
DMC 3750 Antique Blue Very Dk does the most work, 69% of the 426 stitches, followed by DMC 3768 Gray Green Dark at 31%. Every colour is used at least 130 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. 45% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
No square stands alone in its colour, so every colour works up in solid blocks. The busiest row changes colour 48 times.
Anchor equivalents
The nearest Anchor colour for each DMC colour in this pattern, measured as ΔE 2000: up to 3 is very close, up to 6 close, up to 10 approximate.
