About this design
A single star on a night-blue ground is a classic nursery motif, and it also works as a reading-corner throw for older children. The star is Y15 Sunflower, edged with a narrow outline of Y14 Butter that keeps the points sharp against the Y35 Navy background. Navy makes up more than three-quarters of the blanket at 1,294 blocks, so the star really glows. The star is mirrored left to right, with its top point centred on the blanket.
How to crochet it
This graph is rated a little harder than our other C2C blankets because of the star points. Each point narrows to a tip of one or two butter blocks, and near the tips the diagonals switch between navy, butter and gold within two or three blocks. Use short lengths on bobbins for the butter outline rather than full balls, and keep the outline continuous by checking each tip against the chart before moving on. The long navy runs between the points are a welcome break. Twist yarns at every colour change so no gaps open up along the outline.
Size and finishing
At 41 blocks square the blanket is about 103 cm across with 2.5 cm blocks in worsted yarn, or about 82 cm with 2 cm blocks in DK, the size most people choose for a cot. Add a round of navy double crochet and then one of butter for a slim, bright edge. If you want a set, the same star at a smaller block size makes a matching cushion front.
Colour plan
Navy does the most work, 77% of the 1,681 blocks, followed by Sunflower at 17%. Every colour is used at least 108 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
It is worked as 81 diagonal rows; the busiest changes colour 8 times. 19 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side: cut a short length of yarn for those instead of carrying it.
