About this design

The moons are worked in Butter for the lit part and Denim for the shadowed part, so even the crescents show their full round shape faintly against the Navy sky. From left to right they show a waxing crescent, a first quarter, a full moon, a last quarter and a waning crescent, lit from the right as they grow and from the left as they shrink, as seen from the northern hemisphere. Single Snow white blocks scatter stars between them. The long, narrow format suits a wall hanging, a bed runner or a table runner.

Size and yarn

The graph is 60 × 20 blocks and is worked in 79 diagonal rows from the bottom-right corner. With 2.5 cm blocks (worsted yarn and a 5 mm hook) it measures about 150 × 50 cm; with 2 cm blocks in DK yarn it is about 120 × 40 cm. The largest colour is Navy, with 800 of the 1,200 blocks. The colours are our own named shades, so choose the closest yarn you can buy, and weigh a ten-block swatch to turn the block counts into an accurate yarn amount. Hang it from a wooden dowel threaded through a row of loops along the top edge.

Colour plan

Navy does the most work, 67% of the 1,200 blocks, followed by Butter at 18%. Snow (10) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

It is worked as 79 diagonal rows; the busiest changes colour 6 times. 10 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side: cut a short length of yarn for those instead of carrying it.
