About this design
This mosaic borrows the look of an 1980s album cover. The sky is built from horizontal bands that run from dark purple at the top through lavender, magenta, pink and coral to orange at the horizon, and each band meets the next with a row of alternating pieces so the change looks smooth from a distance. The sun is a big half disc: bright yellow at the top, light orange in the middle and bright orange at the base, cut by magenta stripes that get closer together as the sun sinks. Below the horizon, its reflection breaks into shorter and shorter orange strips across dark blue water, fading into black at the bottom edge.
How to build it
The whole picture fits one 32 × 32 baseplate, about 25.6 cm (10 inches) square. Sort your pieces by colour first, then build row by row from the top, using the bold lines on the chart every 16 pieces to keep your place. The sky bands are long runs of a single colour, so they go quickly; slow down for the stripes through the sun, where it is easy to miscount by one. Hang the finished plate in a frame or stand it on a shelf.
Colour plan
Dark blue does the most work, 22% of the 1,024 pieces, followed by Magenta at 16%. Every colour is used at least 40 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
On a baseplate, grouping each row's same-coloured studs into 1×N plates (up to 1×8) builds it from about 269 parts instead of 1,024 single studs.
