About this design
The waves are a simple rolling zigzag in Y34 Royal on Y01 Snow, two stitches thick at the slopes and one at the crest and trough, so the line looks smooth. Two wave rows are stacked with a plain row between them, which gives a crisp nautical feel. It is a good first colourwork band: only two colours, a short repeat and a shape you can follow in the knitting after one repeat.
Knitting the chart
The motif repeats every 8 stitches, and the chart shows 6 repeats across 48 stitches. Every patterned row uses two colours. The longest float is 7 stitches, so catch long floats behind the work every three to five stitches. Keep your stranding loose; on a short band it is easy to pull the floats tight and pucker the fabric.
Sizing and uses
At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 48-stitch chart is 24 cm wide and the 13 rows are about 4.6 cm tall. Any stitch count that is a multiple of 8 works, such as 64, 88 or 96 for a hat or cuff.
Colour plan
Snow does the most work, 69% of the 624 stitches, followed by Royal at 31%. Every colour is used at least 192 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
The longest float is 7 stitches, and 4 rows have a float longer than 5 that should be caught on the wrong side. Every row uses at most two colours, so it can all be worked as stranded colourwork.
