About this design

Lusekofte, the classic Norwegian lice jumper, gets its name from the single light stitches dotted across a dark body, said to look like lice. This chart places one Y02 Cream stitch every six stitches on alternate patterned rows, offset so the dots form a staggered grid on Y25 Cranberry. With plain rows between the dotted ones it is the gentlest all-over colourwork there is, and it pairs well with a bigger star or snowflake band at the yoke.

Knitting the chart

The motif repeats every 6 stitches, and the chart shows 8 repeats across 48 stitches. Every patterned row uses two colours. The longest float is 5 stitches. On dotted rows, twist the cream around the cranberry at least once between dots to keep the floats from snagging.

Sizing and uses

At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 48-stitch chart is 24 cm wide and the 18 rows are about 6.4 cm tall. Any stitch count that is a multiple of 6 works, such as 96 or 108 for an adult hat, or 180 or more for a jumper body.

Colour plan

Cranberry does the most work, 94% of the 864 stitches, followed by Cream at 6%. Every colour is used at least 48 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

The longest float is 5 stitches, so no float needs catching. Every row uses at most two colours, so it can all be worked as stranded colourwork.
