About this design
A band of hearts is a sweet way to add colour to a hat brim, a mitten cuff or the lower edge of a cardigan. The hearts are knitted in Y24 Scarlet on Y02 Cream, two colours from our yarn palette with plenty of contrast, and each heart sits in a 10-stitch repeat with a plain cream round above and below to separate the band from the rest of your knitting.
Knitting the band
This is a stranded chart, so you carry both colours along each round and only knit with two at a time. Be aware that the floats are not all short. In the widest round of each heart the cream is carried behind nine scarlet stitches, and in the round at the tip of the hearts the scarlet is carried behind nine cream stitches. Floats over five stitches catch easily on fingers, so trap the carried yarn behind the working yarn once in the middle of those runs. Keep floats relaxed by spreading the stitches on the right needle before each colour change.
Sizing and repeats
At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 50-stitch chart is 25 cm wide and the 9 rows are about 3.2 cm tall. Knitted in the round, the stitch count must be a multiple of 10: 40 stitches (20 cm) suits an adult mitten cuff, 80 stitches (40 cm) a baby or toddler hat and 100 stitches (50 cm) an adult hat. Worked flat, read right-side rows from right to left and wrong-side rows from left to right, and carry both yarns to the edges.
Colour plan
Cream does the most work, 59% of the 450 stitches, followed by Scarlet at 41%. Every colour is used at least 185 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
Working notes
The longest float is 9 stitches, and 4 rows have a float longer than 5 that should be caught on the wrong side. Every row uses at most two colours, so it can all be worked as stranded colourwork.
