About this design

The zigzags step down and back up across an eight-stitch repeat, each stripe two rows deep, separated by two rows of Y02 Cream. The stripe colours move through Y30 Plum, Y25 Cranberry, Y18 Pumpkin and Y15 Sunflower, so the band glows like a sunset. Where one colour hands over to the next, a few rows briefly use three colours; you can avoid that by changing colour only at the start of a row and accepting a slightly different handover.

Knitting the chart

The motif repeats every 8 stitches, and the chart shows 6 repeats across 48 stitches. Most rows use two colours, and a few use three. The longest float is 6 stitches, so catch long floats behind the work every three to five stitches. Cut the stripe colours after each stripe rather than carrying them up, so the inside stays neat.

Sizing and uses

At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 48-stitch chart is 24 cm wide and the 16 rows are about 5.7 cm tall. Any stitch count that is a multiple of 8 works, such as 88 or 96 for a hat or 64 for a cowl in bulky yarn.

Colour plan

Cream does the most work, 50% of the 768 stitches, followed by Plum at 13%. Every colour is used at least 96 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

The longest float is 6 stitches, and 4 rows have a float longer than 5 that should be caught on the wrong side. 4 rows use three or more colours; work those with bobbins (intarsia) or duplicate-stitch the extra colour afterwards.
