About this design

The octopus has a big round head in Pink with a few Light Pink spots for texture, two Black eyes each with a White highlight, and a tiny Black smile. Below the head, the tentacles hang down as alternating stripes of pink and black, ending in little points that curl outward. The spaces between the tentacle tips are left empty, so the outline is wavy and playful. It is a favourite with children who love sea creatures.

You will need roughly 149 Pink, 88 Black, 4 Light Pink and 2 White beads. Buy a few spares of each, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

At 17 × 17 beads the design fits easily on one large square pegboard. Leave the gaps between the tentacle tips empty; they make the shape when the piece comes off the board.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge, then let it cool, turn it over and press the back. Cool it flat under a heavy book so it stays straight. At about 8.5 × 8.5 cm in midi beads it makes an ocean-themed magnet, a keyring or a bathroom decoration.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
