About this design

This little cake sits in a paper case striped in Apricot and Light Brown, with a domed cap of Blush frosting on top. A few Pastel Blue sprinkles and a White highlight are dotted across the frosting, and a single Red cherry crowns the top. The black outline is one bead wide all the way round, which keeps the shape crisp and helps the piece hold together after ironing. It is a lovely party activity: make one per guest and use them as place cards or cake toppers.

You will need roughly 57 Blush, 51 Black, 22 Apricot, 18 Light Brown, 5 Pastel Blue, 4 Red and 2 White beads. Buy a few spares of each, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

At 15 × 15 beads the design fits easily on one large square pegboard. Do the case stripes row by row, alternating the two colours, before you fill the frosting.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge, then let it cool, turn it over and press the back. Cool it flat under a heavy book so it stays straight. At about 7.5 × 7.5 cm in midi beads it makes a party favour, a magnet or a birthday card decoration.

Colour plan

Perler 80-19063 Blush does the most work, 36% of the 159 beads, followed by Perler 80-19018 Black at 32%. Perler 80-19052 Pastel Blue (5), Perler 80-19005 Red (4) and Perler 80-19001 White (2) are used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 29% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
