About this design

The avocado is a simple pear shape, which makes it a relaxed first project. Inside the black outline, a ring of Dark Green stands for the skin and a second ring of Sour Apple gives the flesh its green edge before it fades to Pastel Yellow in the middle. The stone sits low in the wide part, where it would be on a real avocado. It is Light Brown with Brown on the lower right for shadow and a small cluster of Tan beads as a highlight.

Bead counts: 160 Pastel Yellow, 64 Black, 60 Dark Green, 56 Sour Apple, 28 Light Brown, 14 Brown and 3 Tan.

Placing the beads

The chart is 19 × 27, so there is room to spare on a large square pegboard. Place the outline and the two green rings first; they follow each other step for step, which makes them easy to count. Then put the stone in, and fill the yellow last — it is the biggest area and you can do it quickly by eye.

Ironing and finishing

An adult should do the ironing. Lay ironing paper over the beads, iron on medium heat with the iron moving all the time, and stop when the beads have joined but still show their holes. Once it is cool, peel it off the board, flip it over and iron the back. Leave it under a book while it cools. At about 9.5 × 13.5 cm it suits a fridge magnet, a keyring on a large split ring, or one of a pair if you make a second half with no stone.

Colour plan

Perler 80-19056 Pastel Yellow does the most work, 42% of the 385 beads, followed by Perler 80-19018 Black at 17%. Perler 80-19035 Tan (3) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 25% of the grid is left empty.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
