About this design

This bracelet runs through the rainbow in order: DMC 321 Red, 608 Burnt Orange Bright, 741 Tangerine Medium, 307 Lemon, 702 Kelly Green, 797 Royal Blue and 552 Violet Medium. Each stripe is two knots wide and steps one place sideways every row, so the colours slant across the band at an even angle. Because every row uses several colours, you carry seven working strings at once, which is good practice for busier picture patterns. The result is bright and graphic, perfect for pride events, festivals and birthday parties.

Setting up and knotting

A 12-knot-wide bracelet needs 12 base strings, plus one working string in each of the 7 colours. Cut the working strings at least a metre long and wind them on bobbins or card so they stay untangled. Each square of the chart is one knot on a base string: forward knots on rows worked left to right, backward knots on rows worked right to left, row by row from the top. Keep the working strings in rainbow order on your clipboard so the next colour is always beside the last one.

Length and finishing

At roughly 2 mm per row, the 56-row chart makes about 11 cm of bracelet. Knotting the chart twice (112 rows) gives about 22 cm, which fits most adult wrists; stop sooner for a child. Finish with a braided tie or a sliding knot at each end so it can be adjusted.

DMC 321 Red does the most work, 14% of the 672 knots, followed by DMC 608 Burnt Orange Bright at 14%. Every colour is used at least 96 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
