About this design

The rainbow chevron is the alpha version of the classic chevron friendship bracelet, and it is a good way to try a chart that looks like the one you already know. The six colours run in spectrum order: DMC 321 Red, 740 Tangerine, 307 Lemon, 700 Green Bright, 797 Royal Blue and 553 Violet. Each colour is a stripe two knots deep, and the stripes bend into a V across the 14-knot width, so the bracelet looks like a stack of rainbow arrows.

How to work it

You need 14 base strings and six working strings. Six bobbins sounds like a lot, but each row only uses a handful of them, and in any one row the colours appear in the same order on both sides of the centre, mirrored around the middle two knots. Lay your bobbins out in rainbow order and the chart becomes almost automatic: each colour moves one knot further from the centre every row. The two middle knots of each row are always the same colour, so check them as you go; if they ever differ, you have slipped a knot.

Length and finishing

The chart repeats every 12 rows, one full turn of the rainbow, and the 48 rows printed here come to about 9.6 cm at roughly 2 mm per row. Seven repeats (84 rows) give about 17 cm. Because every colour is used equally, cut your six working strings to the same length. Plait the ties in three colours from the bracelet for a neat finish.

Colour plan

DMC 700 Green Bright does the most work, 17% of the 672 knots, followed by DMC 307 Lemon at 17%. Every colour is used at least 112 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
