About this design

Two kinds of note alternate down the band: a single quaver with a curled flag, and a pair of notes joined by a thick double beam. Both are DMC 3371 Black Brown, which is softer than black, on 3743 Antique Violet Very Light. The note heads are rounded clusters of knots and the stems are single knots, so the design looks like printed sheet music. Three plain rows separate each note. It makes a thoughtful gift for a choir, band or orchestra friend, or a way to show off your own favourite instrument.

Setting up and knotting

A 12-knot-wide bracelet needs 12 base strings, plus one working string in each of the 2 colours. Cut the working strings at least a metre long and wind them on bobbins or card so they stay untangled. Each square of the chart is one knot on a base string: forward knots on rows worked left to right, backward knots on rows worked right to left, row by row from the top. The note stems are single knots in a straight line; count from the edge to keep each stem in the same column.

Length and finishing

At roughly 2 mm per row, the 46-row chart makes about 9 cm of bracelet. Knotting the chart twice (92 rows) gives about 18 cm, which fits most adult wrists; stop sooner for a child. Finish with a braided tie or a sliding knot at each end so it can be adjusted.

DMC 3743 Antique Violet Vy Lt does the most work, 77% of the 552 knots, followed by DMC 3371 Black Brown at 23%. Every colour is used at least 128 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
