About this design

The shell is a dome of Green checked with Dark Green, which gives it the look of a patterned turtle shell. A Sour Apple head with a White eye pokes out on the right, and four Sour Apple legs stand beneath the shell, separated by small gaps. The design is low and wide, only nine beads tall, so it is one of the fastest projects in the library and a good choice for very young children.

You will need roughly 61 Black, 32 Green, 17 Dark Green, 13 Sour Apple and 1 White beads. Buy a few spares of each, because the odd bead always rolls away.

Placing the beads

At 19 × 9 beads the design fits easily on one large square pegboard. Leave the gaps between the legs empty so they stay separate after ironing.

Ironing and finishing

Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge, then let it cool, turn it over and press the back. Cool it flat under a heavy book so it stays straight. At about 9.5 × 4.5 cm in midi beads it makes a magnet, a zipper pull or a pencil-case decoration.

Working notes

All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
