Materials
About this design
Pandas are naturally graphic, which makes them perfect for beads. This one has a White face, two round Black ears, and Black eye patches with a single White bead in each for a sparkle. A small Black nose sits in the centre and two Blush cheeks add a touch of colour. It uses only three colours and is fully symmetrical, so it is easy for beginners.
You will need roughly 113 White, 81 Black and 2 Blush beads. Buy a few spares of each, because the odd bead always rolls away.
Placing the beads
At 17 × 13 beads the design fits easily on one large square pegboard. White beads show dust and fingerprints; wash hands before you start.
Ironing and finishing
Ironing is a job for an adult. Cover the beads with ironing paper, set a dry iron to medium and move it in slow circles until the beads just begin to merge, then let it cool, turn it over and press the back. Cool it flat under a heavy book so it stays straight. At about 8.5 × 6.5 cm in midi beads it makes a coaster, a badge or a gift for a panda fan.
Colour plan
Perler 80-19001 White does the most work, 58% of the 196 beads, followed by Perler 80-19018 Black at 41%. Perler 80-19063 Blush (2) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 11% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
All the beads touch along a full side, so it irons into one solid piece.
