About this design

This portrait keeps the face simple and bold so it reads well in square pieces. The head is bright orange, outlined in dark brown, with two pointed ears lined in light pink. Three rust-brown tabby stripes run down the forehead, and short stripes appear again on each cheek. The eyes are bright green with a dark brown pupil line and a single white highlight that brings them to life. A white muzzle sits below, with a pink nose and a small dark mouth. The background is a large checkerboard of light aqua and sand green squares, each four pieces wide.

How to build it

The mosaic fits one 32 × 32 baseplate, about 25.6 cm (10 inches) square. Lay out the checkerboard first, leaving gaps where the cat will go, then build the outline and fill the face. To make a portrait of your own pet, open the chart in the editor and recolour it: grey and white for a tabby, black with white for a tuxedo cat, or swap the eyes to amber or blue.

Colour plan

Sand green does the most work, 26% of the 1,024 pieces, followed by Light aqua at 26%. Bright pink (4) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

On a baseplate, grouping each row's same-coloured studs into 1×N plates (up to 1×8) builds it from about 368 parts instead of 1,024 single studs.
