About this design

Each paw print has four toe pads curving around a larger rounded main pad, all in DMC 3799 Pewter Gray Very Dark. The prints alternate between the left and right sides of the band, like footprints across fresh snow, on a background of 3753 Antique Blue Ultra Very Light. Two colours and simple shapes make this one of the easiest picture patterns in the library, and the dark grey is softer than black against the pale blue. It makes a lovely gift for anyone with a new puppy or kitten, or a fundraiser bracelet for an animal shelter.

Setting up and knotting

A 14-knot-wide bracelet needs 14 base strings, plus one working string in each of the 2 colours. Cut the working strings at least a metre long and wind them on bobbins or card so they stay untangled. Each square of the chart is one knot on a base string: forward knots on rows worked left to right, backward knots on rows worked right to left, row by row from the top. Because the prints alternate sides, check the starting column of each print against the chart before you begin it.

Length and finishing

At roughly 2 mm per row, the 44-row chart makes about 9 cm of bracelet. Knotting the chart twice (88 rows) gives about 18 cm, which fits most adult wrists; stop sooner for a child. Finish with a braided tie or a sliding knot at each end so it can be adjusted.

DMC 3753 Antique Blue Ult Vy Lt does the most work, 69% of the 616 knots, followed by DMC 3799 Pewter Gray Vy Dk at 31%. Every colour is used at least 192 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.
