About this design

A band of snowflakes around the yoke is the signature of a classic winter jumper, and this chart is sized to sit comfortably in one. Each flake is knitted in Y01 Snow on a Y35 Navy ground, with a tiny centre of Y32 Sky that catches the eye from across a room. The flakes are complete eight-pointed shapes with a navy round above and below, so the band can be framed by peerie bands or left on its own.

Knitting the band

Be aware before you start that this is not a short-float chart. The rounds with a single white stitch at each flake’s tip leave a twelve-stitch float, the rounds below them floats of six and eight, and the centre round, worked in snow and sky only, leaves the sky carried past ten stitches. Two rounds also use all three colours. To keep things comfortable, knit the sky stitches in snow and add them afterwards in duplicate stitch, which turns the centre round into a plain snow round, and trap any float longer than five stitches once or twice. Keep your tension loose across the long floats so the band does not pull in.

Sizing and repeats

At 20 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm, the 52-stitch chart is 26 cm wide and the 13 rows are about 4.6 cm tall. The stitch count in the round must be a multiple of 13: 91 stitches (about 45 cm) suits a child’s hat, 104 stitches (52 cm) an adult hat, and a yoke round of 208 or 234 stitches holds 16 or 18 flakes. Place the band where the yoke is at its widest, before the first decrease round.

Colour plan

Navy does the most work, 70% of the 676 stitches, followed by Snow at 27%. Every colour is used at least 20 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

The longest float is 12 stitches, and 9 rows have a float longer than 5 that should be caught on the wrong side. 2 rows use three or more colours; work those with bobbins (intarsia) or duplicate-stitch the extra colour afterwards.
