About this design
Where our classic snowflake is open and airy, this one is denser and more crystalline. Each of the four straight arms carries three pairs of branches, and the four diagonal arms end in small solid clusters, so the flake looks like it has grown in layers. It is stitched in DMC 312 Baby Blue Very Dark, a clear mid-navy, with tips of 3325 Baby Blue Light and a five-stitch centre of 3753 Antique Blue Ultra Very Light. The whole design uses only 153 stitches, so it is genuinely quick to make.
How to stitch it
Work the centre cross first, then each straight arm from the middle outwards, adding its branches as you pass them. The branches leave the arm at an angle, one stitch at a time, so bring the needle up at the shared corner of the previous stitch to keep the line unbroken. Stitch the diagonal arms next, then the solid clusters at their ends, and finish with the pale tips. Because there are so few stitches, it is worth using a single length of thread per colour and finishing off neatly; a tidy back matters if the piece will be hung where both sides show.
Finishing ideas
At 29 × 29 stitches the design is about 2.1 inches across on 14-count and 1.6 inches on 18-count, which suits a felt-backed tree ornament, a gift tag or the front of a small card. Stitch a set in different blues, or on silver-grey fabric, for a coordinated batch of decorations.
Colour plan
DMC 312 Baby Blue Very Dark does the most work, 65% of the 153 stitches, followed by DMC 3325 Baby Blue Light at 31%. DMC 3753 Antique Blue Ult Vy Lt (5) is used only a little: small details worth marking on the chart so you don't miss them. 82% of the grid is left empty.
Working notes
60 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side; stitch those as you pass rather than starting a new thread for each. The busiest row changes colour 16 times.
