About this design

Gingham works by overlapping two sets of stripes, and the trick in yarn is to show where they cross with a third shade. Here the red stripes meet in squares of Y24 Scarlet, the single stripes are Y20 Blush and the gaps between are Y01 Snow. Each square is four blocks by four, which gives a 12 × 12 grid of squares across the blanket. It is the kind of throw that looks right on a garden bench, a farmhouse chair or rolled up in a picnic basket.

How to crochet it

C2C diagonals cut across gingham at an angle, so every diagonal changes colour roughly every four blocks. That is the main challenge of this graph and the reason for the many bobbins it needs. Some makers carry the unused yarn inside the blocks instead; it saves ends but the colour can peek through blush and white, so test a few rows first. Blush makes up half the blanket at 1,152 blocks, while scarlet and snow each take 576, so buy twice as much blush as either of the others.

Size and finishing

With 2.5 cm blocks (worsted yarn, 5 mm hook) the blanket measures about 120 cm square; with 2 cm DK blocks it is about 96 cm, a pram or lap size. You can also use the graph for a cushion by working just one quarter of it, 24 × 24 blocks, which gives about 60 cm with worsted yarn. Edge it with a round of scarlet crab stitch for a firm, rope-like border.
