About this design

Chevron stripes are usually crocheted in ripple stitch, but working them in corner-to-corner blocks gives crisp, stepped edges and a texture that looks woven. This throw uses four colours from our yarn palette in a calm coastal mix: Y39 Deep Teal, Y37 Aqua, Y02 Cream and Y04 Sand. Each stripe is six blocks deep and the zigzags peak every 16 blocks, so three full chevrons cross the width.

How to crochet it

C2C is worked in diagonal rows, so the stripes cross your rows at a slant and you will change colour several times in most diagonals. Wind a separate yarn bobbin for each patch of colour along the diagonal instead of carrying yarn behind, which shows through the open blocks. Because the throw is a rectangle, increase at both edges until the diagonal reaches the 48-block width, then increase on one side and decrease on the other until you reach the 60-block length, then decrease at both edges to finish. The block counts in the colour key help you buy yarn: aqua is the largest at 858 blocks, sand the smallest at 582.

Size and finishing

The finished size depends on your block size. With 2.5 cm blocks (typical for worsted-weight yarn on a 5 mm hook) the throw is about 120 × 150 cm, a good sofa size. With 2 cm DK blocks it comes out near 96 × 120 cm, a lap or cot blanket. Finish with a round or two of double crochet in deep teal to square off the stepped edges.

Colour plan

Aqua does the most work, 30% of the 2,880 blocks, followed by Cream at 26%. Every colour is used at least 582 times, so there are no tiny one-off details to hunt for. Every square of the grid is filled.

Working notes

It is worked as 107 diagonal rows; the busiest changes colour 8 times. 2 squares stand alone in their colour, with no same-coloured neighbour along a side: cut a short length of yarn for those instead of carrying it.
