From inches to blocks

A C2C graph is a grid where every square is one block of crochet. To make a blanket of a certain size, divide its width and height by the size of one of your blocks. A 30 × 36 inch baby blanket at 25 mm per block is 30 × 25.4 ÷ 25 = 30 blocks wide and 37 blocks tall, or 1,110 blocks in all.

Worked example

You want a 50 × 60 inch throw. Your swatch of 10 × 10 blocks measures 24 cm, so one block is 24 mm.

  1. Width: 50 × 25.4 ÷ 24 = 52.9, so 53 blocks.
  2. Height: 60 × 25.4 ÷ 24 = 63.5, so 64 blocks (rounded).
  3. Blocks: 53 × 64 = 3,392.
  4. Yarn at 0.9 m per block: about 3,053 m, or 16 balls of 200 m.
  5. Diagonal rows: 53 + 64 − 1 = 116.

Using the result

Set the width in the C2C pattern maker to the number of blocks across, and it builds a graph of that size from your photo or design, with written diagonal rows and yarn per colour. The guide to reading C2C graphs explains how to follow it row by row.

Tips

  • Measure after blocking if you plan to block the finished blanket; blocks can relax by a few percent.
  • Buy extra yarn for the main colour, from the same dye lot, and allow for a border.
  • Big blankets are heavy: a queen-size C2C can need several kilograms of yarn, so consider a lighter weight or bigger hook.

Frequently asked questions

How big is one C2C block?

It depends on your yarn, hook and tension. With worsted yarn and a 5 mm hook, blocks are often close to an inch (25 mm). Crochet a small swatch of 10 × 10 blocks, measure it and divide by 10.

How is the yarn estimate worked out?

It multiplies the number of blocks by the yarn used per block, 0.9 m by default, which is the figure our pattern maker uses for worsted-weight blocks. Weigh or measure a swatch to set your own figure.

Why does the number of diagonal rows matter?

C2C is worked in diagonal rows from one corner. A graph W blocks wide and H blocks tall has W + H − 1 rows, which tells you how long the project will take compared with others.

Are the common sizes standard?

They are typical sizes rather than fixed rules. Measure the bed, cot or sofa the blanket is for, and allow a little extra if you plan to add a border.
